Rasoolullah Using a Dye
Ash-Shama'il Al-Muhammadiyah 45
Abu Rimtha informed:
“I came to the Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) with a son of mine, so he said; ‘Is this your son?’ I said: ‘Yes,
I acknowledge him!’ He said: ‘He must not harm you, and you must not harm him!’ I also noticed that the grayness of his hair was reddish.”
حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ مَنِيعٍ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا هُشَيْمٌ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْمَلِكِ بْنُ عُمَيْرٍ ، عَنِ إِيَادِ بْنِ لَقِيطٍ ، قَالَ : أَخْبَرَنِي أَبُو رِمْثَةَ ، قَالَ : أَتَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مَعَ ابْنٍ لِي ، فَقَالَ : " ابْنُكَ هَذَا ؟ " فَقُلْتُ : نَعَمْ , أَشْهَدُ بِهِ ، قَالَ : " لا يَجْنِي عَلَيْكَ ، وَلا تَجْنِي عَلَيْهِ " ، قَالَ : وَرَأَيْتُ الشَّيْبَ أَحْمَرَ ، قَالَ أَبُو عِيسَى : هَذَا أَحْسَنُ شَيْءٍ رُوِيَ فِي هَذَا الْبَابِ ، وَأَفْسَرُ لأَنَّ الرِّوَايَاتِ الصَّحِيحَةَ أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ لَمْ يَبْلُغِ الشَّيْبَ . وَأَبُو رِمْثَةَ اسْمُهُ : رِفَاعَةُ بْنُ يَثْرِبِيٍّ التَّيْمِيُّ .

Explanation
comments
It was the custom in the pre-Islamic times (jaahiliyah) that a son was punished for the crimes of his father. On this basis Abu Rimthah Radhiallahy 'Anhu said this, so that if it would be necessary at any time, Sayyidina Rasulullah Sallallhu 'Alayhi Wasallam would be witness that truly this was his son. Sayyidin Rasullulah Sallallhu 'Alayhi Wasallam in refuting this custom of the jaahiliyyah said: 'This is not the law of Islaam, that one person commits a crime and another gets punished for it." (No laden soul can bear anothers load. Surah Najm, 38).

Abu Huraira was asked:
“Did Allah’s Messenger (Allah bless him and give him peace) dye [his hair]?” He said: “Yes!”
حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ بْنُ وَكِيعٍ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي، عَنْ شَرِيكٍ، عَنْ عُثْمَانَ بْنِ مَوْهَبٍ، قَالَ: سُئِلَ أَبُو هُرَيْرَةَ: هَلْ خَضَبَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم؟ قَالَ: نَعَمْ.
قال أبو عيسى: وروى أبو عوانة هذا الحديث عن عثمان بن عبد الله بن موهب فقال عن أم سلمة

Ash-Shama'il Al-Muhammadiyah 47
Al-Jahdama, the wife of Bishr ibn al- Khasasiyya, said:
"I saw Allah’s Messenger (Allah bless him and give him peace) come out of his house shaking his head, for he had performed the major ritual ablution, and on his head there was some trace of henna." (Or he said: saffron. The Shaikh doubted this.)
حَدَّثَنَا إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ هَارُونَ، قَالَ: أَنْبَأَنَا النَّضْرُ بْنُ زُرَارَةَ، عَنْ أَبِي جَنَابٍ، عَنْ إِيَادِ بْنِ لَقِيطٍ، عَنِ الْجَهْدَمَةِ، امْرَأَةِ بِشْرِ ابْنِ الْخَصَاصِيَّةِ، قَالَتْ: أَنَا رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم يَخْرُجُ مِنْ بَيْتِهِ يَنْفُضُ رَأْسَهُ وَقَدِ اغْتَسَلَ، وَبِرَأْسِهِ رَدْعٌ مِنْ حِنَّاءٍ أَوْ قَالَ: رَدْغٌ شَكَّ فِي هَذَا الشَّيْخُ.

"I saw the hair of Allah’s Messenger (Allah bless him and give him peace)dyed.”
حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا عَمْرُو بْنُ عَاصِمٍ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا حُمَيْدٌ، عَنْ أَنَسٍ، قَالَ: رَأَيْتُ شَعَرَ رَسُولِ اللهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم مَخْضُوبًا.

comments
As has been explained there are different narrations on the dying of the hair of Sayyidina Rasulullahu Sallallahu 'Alayhi Wasallam. There is an apparent contradiction between this narration and the one mentioned in the first hadith of the previous chapter, where Sayyidina Anas Radiyallahu 'Anhu denies Sayyidina Rasulullah Sallallahu' Alayhi Wasallam used a dye. we may take both narrations to be correct, as they could have been narrated at an earlier and a later period.

Hammad said:
'Abdullah ibn Muhammad ibn 'Uqail also informed us: "I saw the hair of Allah’s Messenger (Allah bless him and give him peace) dyed in the presence of Anas ibn Malik."
قَالَ حَمَّادٌ : وَأَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَقِيلٍ قَالَ : رَأَيْتُ شَعْرَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عِنْدَ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ مَخْضُوبًا
